Description
Our small ship Alaskan cruise visited the town of Provideniya, Siberia, Russia. The town used to be a main icebreaker refueling port but the advent of nuclear powered icebreakers left the town on the decline with a population of about 800. We were invited to a show put on by the local children. The singing (in Russian) and dancing including a cowboy dance was wonderful. Afterwards the children posed in their costumes. Frankly I was amazed at the colors, designs and workmanship of the costumes as well as the singing and dancing. Judging from the lack of smiles I am not sure the children knew what to make of us.
